It is a sunna mu’akkada for every person (who is not a slave) to give an udhiya on Eid al-Adha.
It is not valid to divide the cost of an udhiya amongst others. If a number of people gather to buy one udhiya, it is invalid and does not count for any of them. (It will merely be considered a regular sadaqa, not udhiya.)
One can, however, intend that the reward (not the cost) of the udhiya be shared with others, on certain conditions. Namely:
- The person lives in the same household.
- The person is related to them in some way, such as a wife or a son.
- The person is a financial dependent of the person paying for the udhiya.
