In the Maliki School, it is impermissible to pray nafl (optional) prayers at certain times. They are:
- During the rising of the sun
- During the setting of the sun
- During the Friday khutba
The question is, when does the impermissibility start during the Friday khutba? Imam Al-Dasuqi in his marginal gloss on Mukhtasar Khalil clarifies that the impermissibility starts immediately when the khatib (the speaker giving the khutba) appears. As soon as he enters, it becomes impermissible to offer optional prayers. Therefore, it would be impermissible for one to pray their optional prayers, even if there was a time left by the khatib to offer nawafil prayers before he began his khutba.
