According to the Maliki madhab, it is permissible to buy and sell cats. Khalil says, “It is permissible to purchase a cat or a predatory animal for its skin.” By this, he meant cats absolutely (for any permitted use) but predators only for skin. Dusuqi cites Banani confirming this: “As for a cat, it is permissible to purchase it to derive benefit from it living or dead according to the apparent understanding of the Mudawanna; this is how Mawwaq explained it as well. In sum, purchasing a cat is permissible.
